My Author Illustrator Journey Started a As A Literal “Pain in the Butt”

Let's start with how the world stopped for me.

I had been burning the candle at both ends trying to pursue my dreams of becoming a writer & illustrator while also finishing up my CDA for childcare, working more then full time being a mom, a wife and running a household. I felt like I couldn't take on anything more. Then I prayed.

I prayed for some kind of clarity, some direction.

  • Where was I supposed to be?

  • What was I supposed to be doing?

And God answered that prayer... with a fractured tailbone . . .

His sense of humor is ironic! The injury stopped me in my tracks.

  • No work

  • Limited mobility

  • The time I needed to think on things.

I was couch bound, in a lot of pain and not able to take the painkillers due to a bad reaction.

While healing, I decided to fully immerse myself in my writing and illustrating to take my mind off of things. I became very intent on finishing my book dummy for Perfectly Pelgild. Feeling lucky for a change, I decided to enter a pitch for Pelgild into a Pitch Party. Outcome, I now have an agent interested in my story.

An Opportunity

I was blessed with the thumbs up from an agent at Red Fox Literary and positive feedback from two other agents that already represented something similar.

I am now in revision number... I don't even know for sure, it's in the 30s! My hope is to bring all of my personality plus characters, including Pelgild, to life in picture book form. And that is how my pain in the butt became a small win for me.

I guess the moral for all aspiring writers; DON’T BECOME A VICTIM OF YOUR OWN CIRCUMSTANCES. Turn those sour lemons into a thriving super stand! Corny, I know, but people who make it don’t count the billions of times they fall only the ways they got back up. So if your feeling defeated, stay in it for a bit because you are not alone. But after you have recognized it and looked at the ways you got there, dust off, pray, meditate, meet with a friend or talk to a stranger and keep moving forward. You’ve got this!

I don't know what my outcome will be, but I feel its a step in the right direction and I am loving my journey!
